Lillie Bridge was once a town in the county of Middlesex, but today has been subsumed into the capital. It is a busy area of London with its own underground station and the Earls Court Exhibition Centre as a major attraction. Back in the middle of the 19th century it had its own important Sports Ground which opened in 1867. The ground was popular for a number of years and Lillie Bridge held its own races in 1873, although the venture was not well supported and the only meeting took place on Monday 2nd June 1873. Stamford Bridge Stadium was built close to the Lillie Bridge Sports ground and this led to the downfall of the Sports Ground. There was a riot at the Ground on Sunday 18th September 1887 and all of its amenities were destroyed, leading to its final closure in 1888. |
